About

This blog is a look into Hannah Eve’s creative writing experience- offering examples of her writing as a Junior at Eastern Michigan University. Though she is declared a Psychology major and wishes to become a doctor in the field, writing has always been a passion of hers.

A Letter in Retrospect

Over the course of the semester, I have learned so much about myself and my writing process. I seldom write creatively in an academic setting, so this class felt like a personal workshop more than it did a dreaded responsibility. We went over three specific genres, including poetry, fiction, and creative essays. I had only truly dabbled in poetics, so this class served as an introduction to genres that I had yet to explore as a writer.

I can happily say that I have become more conscious of bad writing habits that I have obtained throughout the years. The biggest bad habit, which also serves as a reflection of my insecurities, was my constant need to edit while I write. Never would I finish a sentence without immediately reading it again. At times, this is still the case for me, but I am aware that it is a problem and that’s a big deal. If we don’t know our problematic habits, how may we fix them? This class served as one of the first external entities to interact with, or even witness, my tries at hand. I feel as though the course is a mark on my writing timeline that suggest a new beginning- a reformative period- if you will.

In regard to my insecurities about my writing, this class was definitely a confidence boost. Sharing what work I had and getting a positive response made me feel as though I had some type of skill. I had always written as a selfish means of therapy, but I feel like I have become acclimated with the idea of an audience. This makes me feel like my voice has strength. This makes me feel as though I have the ability to influence. That is both terrifying and comforting and I am happy this class has opened that door of possibility.

I, knowing the way my mind evolves, will likely stumble upon this portfolio later down the road and detest the work that I now openly offer unto you. Know that this is the first time I have ever written a short story or a fictional essay. You, my dear reader, are witnessing beginnings. I hope you enjoy them and see potential betwixt the sentences I have crafted for you. It is a great gift that I feel able to share this on the internet, and I owe it all to my creative writing class.
